Australia is launching a new goods and services tax (GST) for overseas sellers of low value items which will take effect from 1 July 2018. Businesses that sell goods into Australia will be required to charge GST on goods valued at A$1,000 or less. UK businesses that sell more than A$75,000 of taxable supplies a year to consumers in Australia will need to register with the Australian Tax Authority (ATO) by 1 July 2018 and pay over any GST due quarterly.
The value liable will be the total value of the supply including transport and insurance costs. GST will not be charged on consignments of goods with a customs value over A$1,000 as these will be subject to border taxes and other import duty processes. Low value goods sold to GST registered Australian businesses will not have to charge GST, and where all of your sales to Australia are business to business no registration will be required.
